Gender diversity is a huge issue among portfolio managers with women making up only 11% of those in the role. That’s just 1.5% higher than a decade ago and especially low compared with other job titles in the investing industry; women comprise roughly 40% of operations, compliance, sales and client service staff.
The lack of female leaders can create an unwelcoming environment for women seeking to enter the industry, according to interviews with over a dozen senior investment industry leaders, several of whom say they had to sacrifice other parts of their life outside of work to get to the roles they’re in today.
Portfolio managers and experts told me that the industry needs more awareness of these types of jobs at a student level to bolster the talent pipeline of women, while others stated that companies need to do work internally to make women more visible, especially in senior leadership positions.
